John Thompson arrived Hobart in 1826 with his wife Harriet (unknown maiden surname)

Aug 18 - ship John Barry, J. Roach commander, 528 tons, from London via Sydney, 6th inst with detachment of Veteran Comp. for this Colony, comp of Capt. D'Arcy and 2 sub alterns, 3 sergeants, 3 corporals, 50 men, 45 women and 42 children.

John Burns b. 27 March 1829, bpt 1 May Hobart by J. Norman 2976/1829. Parent John occ. Prtivate Royal Veterans and Harriet. [He m. Charlotte Elizabeth Ives (see below) 1855 and died 23 February 1898]

Augustus 17 July 1832. Bpt 15 August 1832 by W H Browne, Launceston 4530/1832. Parents: John occ. Watchman, and Harriet.

30/6/1840 Thompson, Harriet, aged 46, Launceston 362/1840, Cause of death: consumption, Informant: Alexander Kean, friend.

Second marriage of John:
John Thompson widower aged 57 pensioner and Eleanor Fulerton widow aged 52, 25 May 1842. Launceston 1590/1842. Signed John Thompson, and E. Fulerton, at Frederick Street in the house of John Thompson, according to the rites and ceremonies of the Independents, John West, ,Minister. In the presence of James Grindland and Ann Hayes.

Obituary "At his residence, Frederick St., Mr John Thompson, aged 74 late Sgt. Grenedier Gurads, Bur Cypress St C of E Section. L'ton Examiner
Other comments John Thompson's second wife arrived in the colony as the wife of William Hunt, another Royal Veteran. After Wm Hunt died she married Alexander Fulerton, also a Royal Veteran. Her third husband was John Thompson, also, of course a Royal Veteran. Eleanor's daughter Eleanor Williams Hunt married a James Thompson, possibly a brother of John Thompson, in 1830. [This is consistent with the evidence I found in the Samlesbury register: There was one older child of John and Alice Thompson: James Thompson, b. 30 Dec. 1784, bapt. 30 Jan., 1785. The name James there is significant because it was the name of John the father's grandfather. DB] Eleanor Hunt-Fullerton-Thompson died at her daughter's residence in Campbell Town, aged 69, in 1859. ... three of John Thompson's children (by his first wife) survived to found families in the colony, Elizabeth m. John Denny in Launceston in 1846, they moved to NW Coast as pioneer settlers at Melrose. John Burns Thompson became the owner of the "Bull's Head" tavern in Charles St., Launceston, and married Charlotte Ives. Augustus married Mary Ann Featherstone in 1864; she died at Oatlands in 1878 and Augustus died in Hobart in 1884.
