Sermon Summary (Click here for complete sermon)
Introducing disciples
After he had spent a while with Jesus, Andrew found his brother Simon and brought him to Jesus. This is the beginning of the recruitment of disciples by one sharing with another their own experience of the Messiah. [John 1:41]. That is the most basic model of evangelism: having something to share with someone you care about. Actually Andrew did do a little more than tell Simon about Jesus, he brought him to meet Jesus. [John 1:42]
Sharing the good news without waiting
Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. It was Jesus himself who brought about
the change in Simon. Andrew certainly had not known Jesus for very long
or very well. It is not necessary to wait until you know a great deal about
him to tell other of Jesus. The answer is "Come and see." [eg. Philip:
John 1:45-46].
The inspiration to follow the Lamb of God
Andrew heard John the Baptist call Jesus "the Lamb of God" and testify
that he was "the Son of God" and began to follow him. [John 1:29,32-40].
It was in that very early period before they had seen very much of him.
So let us encourage one another to share what we know and introduce people
without waiting until we have travelled a long way and learned a great
deal. Let others learn with us as we travel with the Lord.
Lamb of God: king and servant
Jesus identified himself with "the servant" whose work for others is
described in the prophecy of Isaiah. See Isaiah 53:1-10, the lamb that
went quietly to his death (compare with 1 Cor.5:7 and 1 Peter 1:18-20;
Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! [John 1:29]);
and Isaiah 49:6 the light to the nations, that my salvation may reach
to the end of the earth. (Compare Revelation 5:6-12.)
The Spirit who sends out witnesses
He was not the Messiah only of his own people, or of his own time and
place. -- The sign of Jonah, the dove, the Spirit who sends people out
with the sacred and eternal message of eternal salvation.

CALL TO WORSHIP
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
We give thanks to God always because of the grace of God that has
been given to us in Christ Jesus. -- from 1 Corinthians 3-4.
"Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!"--
John 1:29
Let us worship God.
In the name of Christ. Amen.

PRAYER OF ADORATION
CONFESSION
Loving God, Lord of the Church, we confess that we have sinned against
you in thought, word and deed: we have not loved you with all our heart
or served you with all our strength; we have been blind to the vision of
a renewed world and deaf to your call to costly discipleship; we have been
indifferent to the suffering of others and unwilling to forgive one another.
In your mercy, Lord, pardon and restore us, that together in the ministry
of Christ we may serve you with joy all the days of our life. Amen.
DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just, and will forgive
our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. [1 John 1:9]
Hear then Christ's word of grace to us: Your sins are forgiven.
Thanks be to God.

INTRODUCTION OF THEME:
A word to the children.
OLD TESTAMENT Isaiah 49:1-7 I give you as a light to the nations
PSALM 40:1-11 I waited patiently for the Lord
I waited patiently for the LORD;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the desolate pit, out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.
Happy are those who make the LORD their trust,
who do not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after false
gods.
You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts
toward us; none can compare with you.
Were I to proclaim and tell of them, they would be more than can
be counted.
Sacrifice and offering you do not desire, but you have given me an
open ear.
Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required.
Then I said, "Here I am;
in the scroll of the book it is written of me.
I delight to do your will, O my God;
your law is within my heart."
I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation;
see, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O LORD.
I have not hidden your saving help within my heart, I have spoken of
your faithfulness and your salvation;
I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from
the great congregation.
Do not, O LORD, withhold your mercy from me;
let your steadfast love and your faithfulness keep me safe forever.
