Joy in Heaven
There will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance [Luke 15:7]. The two parables of the lost sheep and the lost coin are about joy. They were intended to show how God felt like the father in the parable of the lost son: his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him [Luke 15:20] God cares. He cares for each and every one. For one to be restored to the family is a cause for rejoicing.
The controversy
Jesus was constantly being accused of keeping bad company. These were not pious people who fell short, but outsiders who
seemed not to care. They certainly changed their ways, if Matthew (Luke 5) and Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10) are examples
but that seems to have been more because they were accepted than vice versa. Matthew called his friends to celebrate and
the authorities were critical of Jesus for being in such company [Luke 5:29-32]. On another occasion, Jesus said Truly I tell
you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. [Matthew 21:29-32].
Inclusiveness
Luke emphasises the way the gospel is good news for all: Samaritans [10:3-37 and 17:11-19]; women have a new place of
importance [7:36-50; 8:3; 10:38-42]; Gentiles will have an opportunity to accept the gospel [2:23; 3:6; 24:27]. At the birth
of Jesus there was an announcement: good news of great joy for all the people. [Luke 2:10]. [Compare Luke 15:4 and
Matthew 18:3].
Implications for us
The message is clear: accepting the sinner, by the grace of God people are accepted not because they are good, but because
God loves them [Ephesians 2:8]. It is amazing how little this teaching is heard and understood. It is a matter of faith. If God
accepts sinners, who are we to question their acceptance? We look for repentance, of course, but acceptance comes first,
and rejoicing comes afterwards.

THANKSGIVING
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up you hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Almighty God,
we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks
for all your goodness and loving-kindness
to us and to all whom you have made.
We bless you for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies,
that with truly thankful hearts
we may show forth your praise,
not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up ourselves to your service,
and by walking before you
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom with you and the Holy Spirit
be honour and glory throughout all ages.
