LIGHTING THE ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS CANDLES
[A family group or individual comes to the table and
one reads:]
After counting the weeks of Advent we have come to Christmas Day.
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who
lived in a land of deep darkness-- on them light has shined. Isaiah
9:2
[Four coloured candles are lit first and then the white
candle, and reading continues.]
The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.
John 1:9
And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his
glory, the glory as of a father's only son, full of grace and truth. John
1:14

Merciful God, our Maker and our Judge,
We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed:
We have not loved you with our whole heart,
We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;
We repent, and are sorry for all our sins.
Father, forgive us.
Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

HYMN Hark the herald angels sing AHB 227 TIS 303
Luke 1:68-79 The song of Zechariah (The Benedictus) [Group]
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has looked favorably on his
people and redeemed them.
He has raised up a mighty saviour for us in the house of his servant
David,
as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,
that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all
who hate us.
Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, and has remembered
his holy covenant,
the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham, to grant us
that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies, might serve
him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.
And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge
of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins.
By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break
upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of
death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
