Sermon summary (Click here for complete sermon)

Christ the King: Judge and Saviour

Sometimes we sing a hymn which begins: The head that once was crowned with thorns is crowned with glory now. The meaning of the title Christ or Messiah is "king", literally "the anointed one", that is the one anointed to be king. But he was mocked with a crown of thorns, a gaudy robe and a reed for a sceptre, while the soldiers jeered at him "Hail, King of the Jews" [Matthew 27:28-29]. We believe that after he rose and met with his disciples he was honoured by being raised to the highest place with God. [Philippians 2:8-11]. So we celebrate today Christ the King, and the establishment of the Kingdom of God when his glory will be fully revealed. [See Ephesians 1:15-23; Colossians 1:15-20, Revelation 1:4-8; 7:9-17].

Christ will come as Judge

It is the faith of the church that God's power will be exercised through Christ at the end. Just as the world was made through him, and he lives and reigns for ever, he is the true Lord of all so he who is our saviour will be our judge. [Revelation 22:12-17]. In the parable of the sheep and the goats, the King of kings, seated on his heavenly throne is judging the people of all the nations of the earth according to their treatment of the least of these who are members of my family. [Matthew 25:31-32; Matthew 25:40.] [See also Matthew 10:40-42; Mark 9:41; and Hebrews 6:10 for special meaning, although it applies more widely also as in the parable of the Good Samaritan, Luke 10:29-37].

The last judgement: can modern people believe in it?

It has not been a popular theme in recent times. Most people, just the same, whether or not they call themselves Christians, believe in one way or another that they will be accountable for what they do. People will have no trouble in agreeing that a mass murderer has done a terrible thing, and they believe that a man can be morally responsible for such a thing. We know that the occasional warnings Jesus gave cannot be easily explained away. [Matthew 25:30; 25:41; 3:12; 3:10; 7:19; 13:40-42; John 15:6.] If people don't learn how to live peaceably together as members of one family under God then terrible things will happen; and there is more to it than that. God's justice must be done if his reign, sovereignty, lordship, rule, and authority is to be established. When we come to the time of judgement, we will rejoice to discover our Saviour as the Judge [Romans 5:8-9; Revelation 7:15-17]

PRAYER OF ADORATION
Te Deum
part 2 [Front of Hymn Book]
You, Christ, are the King of glory, ...

CONFESSION
Almighty and most merciful Father, we have strayed from your ways like lost sheep. We have left undone what we ought to have done, and we have done what we ought not to have done. We have followed our own ways and the desires of our own hearts. We have broken your holy laws. Yet, good Lord, have mercy on us; restore those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to all people in Jesus Christ our Lord.

DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. -- Romans 5:8
Hear then Christ's word of grace: Your sins are forgiven.
Thanks be to God

DOXOLOGY:
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

SERMON

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
Minister
I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. (Ephesians 1:17-19)

People
God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. (Ephesians 1:20-23)
