I go to prepare a place for you

In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? [John 14:2]. Jesus knew that he was going to die. He recalled them to their fundamental belief in God, asking them to trust him also, as they had come to know God through him [John 14:1 and see John 14:9-10]. They could not come with him then; but they would follow him later [John 13:36]. He went ahead ... to give eternal life to all ... [John 17:1b-2] ...that where I am, there you may be also. [John 14:3]. There is plenty of room.

How were they to find their way there? Not only would he seek them out and take them with him, but they knew the way already. [John 14:4-7]. They were not sure, so said I am the way, and the truth, and the life. It was a call to faith in which we respond in thankful love to what he has done for us, as in the hymn:

My God I love thee; not because
I hope for heaven thereby ...

Thou, O my Jesus, thou didst me
upon the cross embrace; ...

Then why, O my blessed Jesus Christ,
should I not love thee well? ...

All who love the Lord are assured of a place with him in the presence of God their Creator. That is enough, it is in every sense "sufficient". But we make a faith response in the midst of life in this world, which we have to know is far from a perfect world. If we are bewildered by horrifying events, so were the followers of Jesus when he died -- at least until they met him risen from the dead [Luke 24:13-35]. We can hope that in our situation today too some good will come out of the evil. The good news is that good can indeed come out of evil. That is how it was possible for Jesus to prepare the way for us to his Father's house -- through his unjust death.
