Trinity -- mystery and reality

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. -- 2 Corinthians 13:13

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, -- Matthew 28:19

Today we celebrate the Holy Trinity. There is mystery as well as reality in our belief in the Trinity: God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We are always limited by the powers of human perception in our encounters with the ineffable mystery of God. We can know God through the wonders of creation, in the person and work of Jesus Christ and through our personal encounter with the Spirit of God as one spirit meeting with another. But our belief in the Trinity is more than a record of our experience that we know God in different ways. It also points to a reality in which we believe. What in human terms we recognize as personality and community are both to be found in God.

God the Father, Creator
Many different peoples in all sorts of different cultures, living very different lives, and having a variety of religious beliefs and practices know something of God in the wonders of creation. [Acts 17:24-25; Romans 1:19-20.] God, whether thought of as Father or Mother or both, is present in creation but is separate from it.

God the Son, Jesus Christ
What distinguishes Christians is our belief that Jesus was not only a particular historical person, but God himself. We call him Lord, meaning he is God [Romans 10:9; John 20:27-28] and to be worshipped [Luke 24:50-53]; who is "God with us" [Matthew 1:23], who was with God at the beginning and was God [John 1:1; Philippians 2:6-8], who ascended to him [Ephesians 4:10; Acts 7:56]; he was an agent of creation [John 1:2-4; Colossians 1:16]; and our redeemer who changes our relationship with God [Hebrews 7:25; 2 Corinthians 5:19.]

God the Holy Spirit
The faith that enables people to say that Jesus is Lord, and thus to see his relationship to God the Creator, is the work of the Spirit [1 Corinthians 12:3; Acts 7:55], the same Spirit who brought his incarnation [Luke 1:35] and was present at the creation [Genesis 1:1-2] and in our redemption [Romans 8:9-11; Galatians 4:4-6]. It is the same sharing (communion [2 Cor 13:13/14]) in the life God that we know in the Lord's Supper [1 Cor 10:16] and with which we are blessed [2 Cor 13:13] .

The Gathering of the People of God

CALL TO WORSHIP
Open our lips, O Lord:
And we shall declare your praise.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, made haste to help us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
Let us praise the Lord.
The Lord's name be praised.

HYMN 65 Holy, holy, holy, Lord God almighty

PRAYER OF ADORATION In Praise of the Trinity
Worthy of praise from every mouth,
worthy of confession from every tongue,
worthy of worship from every creature,
is your glorious name, O Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
For you created the world in your grace,
and by your compassion you saved the world.
To your majesty, O God,
ten thousand times ten thousand bow down and adore,
singing and praising without ceasing, and saying:
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts;
heaven and earth are full of your praises.
Hosanna in the highest.
Nestorian Liturgy, 5th Century.

CONFESSION [In three parts, concluding ...]
Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy.
Christ have mercy. Christ have mercy.
Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy.

DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. -- 1 Timothy 1:15
Hear then Christ's word of grace to us: Your sins are forgiven.
Thanks be to God.

INTRODUCTION OF THEME: The Holy Trinity: known and unknown

FIRST READING Genesis 1:1-5 In the beginning God created
PSALM 8 O Lord, our sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth
O LORD, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established;
what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?
Yet you have made them a little lower than God,
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet,
all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O LORD, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! -- Psalm 8
